My trip to Chile is over and I should be back to Québec tonight. I'll have to continue working on my #MonsterMusume #Rachnera #cosplay for @ninjadivision and @sevenseasentertainment. Here are more work in progress steps. We covered the styrofoam spider parts with pieces of agglomerated  #fiberglass cloth that were first soaked with polyester resin. You have to make sure that you put enough layers everywhere. This is how fiberglass looks like before you apply auto body filler on it. As I said before, there are more efficient ways and equipment to do big fiberglass structures like this. There are those air guns that spray both polyester resin and shreded fiberglass at the same time, so it takes very little time to cover a huge structure. That's what they use for fiberglass bathtubs, for example. But since that specialized piece of equipment is expensive and since I don't plan to build huge fiberglass structures for the rest of my life, my friend and I covered the whole thing with fiberglass by hand. As you already know, the spider's body was made using styrofoam. Now that it's covered of the fiberglass shell, it's not necessary to keep the styrofoam inside. We could, but it would just add more weight to the final structure. 'Foam is light' you'll say.  Well it's not so light when you use such a big quantity of foam.  So my friend cut a hole in the spider's body, a hole big enough to allow us to take off all the foam.  Honestly, by chance I have no friend in a pro-environment group because they would hate me.  Building big fiberglass structures isn't environment friendly.  The styrofoam enters my workshop as sheets and it leaves the workshop in pieces in garbage bags. :S  Pro-environment people, don't worry. I will soon go back to my sewing machines. Watch my guilty smile while I'm sitting in styrofoam pieces. Do as I say not as I do. One of the only good sides of fiberglass is that it can be cut and patched as many times as you want. Once the spider's body was empty, we put back the piece that had been removed and we patched it with more fiberglass cloth and polyester resin. Auto body filler will hide everything. More #WIP pics coming soon... #AX2016

Working on my #MonsterMusume #Rachnera #cosplay for @ninjadivision and @sevenseasentertainment. Nothing never looks sexy when you work with #fiberglass. It looks like a big mess until the really end. We have dismantled the spider's legs and body and have started applying a layer of auto body filler (the blue product) on the fiberglass. Auto body filler takes the color of the hardener you mix it with. Mine is blue. Wish it would be pink. :) It's to be covered with paint anyway... It's hard to evenly cover intricate shapes with body filler. Well, it's hard for me.  I have various types of spatulas, metal, plastic and rubber, but even after all the time I spent on the robot, I'm not an expert. What I have, though, is a lot of sanding machines, sanding paper and good will to spend as many hours as necessary sanding my body filler until it will be slick and perfect. Mix body filler, apply, wait and sand. See where the imperfections are. Mix body filler, apply, wait and sand. Repeat until the fiberglass shape is perfect. And this is how I became muscular... No joke. Soon I won't need my Power Girl muscle suit anymore. #ninjadivision #sodapopminiatures #sevenseasentertainment #manga #japaneseanime #makingof #wip #costuming #sculpting #workshop #cosplayer #cosplayers #marieclaudebourbonnais #frenchcanadian #AX2016

Working on my #MonsterMusume #Rachnera #cosplay installation for @ninjadivision and @sevenseasentertainment. #Fiberglass fun is going on. Skipping many steps and many, many hours of work. We have started the finishing process, the blue surface being the auto body filler that you sand to give fiberglass its slick surface. (See my previous Instagram post for details. ) You don't want to sand fiberglass. That's what's so itchy. You want to sand auto body filler. So you have to put a thin layer of it everywhere. And then, sand, with all the sanding machines you can think of, and sometimes you sand by hand, and you sand again, until you wake up with numb arms, hands and fingers and you can barely close your hands. No, I won't start a fiberglass shop. I'm missing my sewing machines. You have no idea... Notice the seat we built in front of the spider's body. This is where I'll be sitting in costume during Anime Expo. :) #ninjadivision #sevenseasentertainment #manga #japaneseanime #makingof #wip #costuming #sculpting #cosplayer #cosplayers #marieclaudebourbonnais #frenchcanadian #AX2016

Working on my #MonsterMusume #Rachnera #cosplay installation for @ninjadivision and @sevenseasentertainment. This next step was improvisation, big time. We realized how the spider's body was hard to manipulate not only because of its weight, but especially because of its round shape. So my friend had the idea to cut the actual spider's tail and to modify the design to add a hidden handle inside a new tail. This handle will allow us to add a type of support on which the spider's body will stand in its box during transportation and we'll also use this 'support' handle/installation to lift the body when it will be time to assemble the spider and install the legs in the convention center. So we cut the actual spider's tail and inserted a metallic piece that will be used to add an extra structure for transportation and assembling. To hide this metallic piece once the spider is assembled, we are building a new tail that will be a cap that will cover everything. Camouflage kind of thing. Here we added some expandable foam over the 'hidden' structure and I'm sculpting the shape of the new spider's tail that we will later cover with fiberglass. #ninjadivision #sevenseasentertainment #manga #japaneseanime #makingof #wip #costuming #sculpting #cosplayer #cosplayers #marieclaudebourbonnais #frenchcanadian #AX2016

Working on my #MonsterMusume #Rachnera #cosplay installation for @ninjadivision and @sevenseasentertainment. You should read my previous post to understand this step. We had to sculpt an improvised tail to the spider. So it was first sculpted in expandable foam (which resists to polyester resin. It doesn't melt when it's directly covered by fiberglass/polyester resin.) Next pic, you see that I have covered the foam with pieces of #fiberglass soaked in polyester resin. Then we covered it with auto body filler. Last step is sanding.  #ninjadivision #sevenseasentertainment #manga #japaneseanime #makingof #wip #costuming #sculpting #cosplayer #cosplayers #marieclaudebourbonnais #frenchcanadian #AX2016

Working on my #MonsterMusume #Rachnera #cosplay installation for @ninjadivision and @sevenseasentertainment. Pleasant and encouraging step: finishing sanding. This is the spider's body. What you see is the spider's belly. It's like if it was laying on its back. While sanding, it may help to put some primer on your piece. You let it dry, you sand again and you'll see where there are bumps and holes to be corrected with more auto body filler. #Fiberglass=a lot of sanding. Here I'm trying to give a break to my right hand and arm that I don't feel anymore... trying to use my left hand. #ninjadivision #sevenseasentertainment #manga #japaneseanime #makingof #wip #costuming #sculpting #cosplayer #cosplayers #marieclaudebourbonnais #frenchcanadian #ax2016

FAQs about my #rachneraarachnera #fiberglass #cosplay installation for @ninjadivision and @sevenseasentertainment Q: You're not really building this by yourself, do you? Someone else is building it for you. People who work in a workshop don't dress up like this and obviously don't wear makeup. A: If most of people were not so interested in cleavage more than they are interested in the real costume making process, I wouldn't have to pimp up my work in progress pics with tanktops and makeup. I wouldn't even have to be on the work in progress pics. No, I don't wear makeup at the workshop when I don't plan to take behind the scene pics. Yes, I really have a fully equipped workshop, a 30' X 40' space that I rent in an industrial park, with a garage door. The mezzanine is my sewing room and the first floor is the space to work with fiberglass, wood, etc. Yes, I really build this stuff with my friend. The 2 of us. 4 hands and a lot of work. If you want to judge cosplayer girls who pretend to make their costumes by themselves and who actually don't, please pick up someone else. You have plenty of choices. Q: Why don't you wear a mask when you're sanding? A: I do wear a mask when I apply polyester resin and automotive paint, but not when I'm sanding auto body filler. Those paper masks irritate my face's skin and then, I have an event, an interview or a photoshoot and I have to hide bad skin under more makeup. It's a choice, as sad as it may be, not to wear a mask for dust when I'm sanding body filler or when I'm sculpting foam. Q: How will you move with this? A: The spider will not move or walk. It's a fiberglass statue with a metallic support inside. I will be sitting in costume in front of the spider, on an integrated fiberglass seat that we made. #ninjadivision #sodapopminiatures  #sevenseasentertainment #manga #monstermusume #rachnera #japaneseanime #makingof #wip #costuming #sculpting #cosplayer #cosplayers #marieclaudebourbonnais #frenchcanadian #AX2016

Working on my #rachneraarachnera #fiberglass #cosplay installation for @ninjadivision and @sevenseasentertainment. My friend and I had already done some finishing sanding on the spider's belly. It's now time to sand and finish its back and the upper part of its body, where I'll sit. Then, primer and paint. But for now, more sanding. You can see the metallic structure concept that my friend came up with to store and assemble the spider. Notice the little metallic piece that is coming out from the spider's tail. This part will be screwed in the transportation box. Part of this metallic piece is removable and will be replaced, once the spider will be assembled, with the tail 'cap' that I had previously sculpted and covered with fiberglass. (See my previous posts.) On the other side, on the front of the spider, the metallic structure will be used to lift up the spider's body before assembling the 2 front legs. Once the front legs will be there, my friend and I, with ideally the help of one more person, will be able to assemble the 2 back legs. Then the spider will hold by itself and we'll remove the metallic support and add the 4 other legs. #ninjadivision #sodapopminiatures #sevenseasentertainment #rachnera #monstermusume #japaneseanime #manga #cosplayer #cosplayers #costumer #costumers #marieclaudebourbonnais #frenchcanadian #AX2016

That's it! @ninjadivision's and @sevenseasentertainment's #fiberglass #Rachneraarachnera is now painted in black! My friend and I are not professional painters and we know it's not perfect, but I'm still very happy with the results. Notice the integrated seat in front of the #spider's body. Many people had questions about this. This is where I'll be sitting during the Anime Expo. My legs will NOT be hidden inside the structure. They will dangle in front of the spider like the spider's pedipalps. That's why we had to add those little shapes in front of the seat, 2 parts that will support my tighs and legs. Otherway, I realized that if my legs were just dangling without support, the weight of my legs was pulling me down and I had to force the muscles of my tighs to stay in balance on the seat. I couldn't have done this for many hours in a row during a convention. That's also why we developed that shape that supports my crotch, like a horse saddle, to help me keeping balance and projecting my body weight through my back. Once the spider is assembled, the seat is about 5 feet high. I don't want to fall down. Also, notice the opening at the top of the seat. The bottom of the seat can actually be removed and gives access to the inside of the spider's body. If you look at my previous posts, you'll see a picture where the legs were assembled to the spider's body. Each leg ends by a metallic tubing that is pierced and fixed with screws and bolts to a metallic plate hidden inside the front part of the spider's body. The front part of the body actually splits in 2 parts. Under the upper part, we screw the legs. We access the other side to screw the legs by entering our hand in the hole under the front seat. The 2nd half of the body comes under the legs and hides the screw/bolts system. The legs go in the circular holes that you see in front of the spider's body on the picture. They are half circle holes because the other half is on the 2nd part of the body that is fixed under the legs. It looks more and more like a huge spider now. :) Only the white skull pattern on top of Rachnera's back is now missing.  #ninjadivision #sevenseasentartainment

Last step of my #rachneraarachnera #fiberglass #cosplay installation for @ninjadivision and @sevenseasentertainment. Like for #Sodapopminiatures' robot, I'm the one who made the taping and masking steps. My friend isn't patient enough to do this, he hates it, so I became the taping/masking choosen one. Taping that #skull pattern wasn't too complicated compared to what I had done on the robot. When I taped and masked the parts that we wanted to keep yellow on the robot and prepared the parts that we wanted to paint in grey, it took me 16 hours to do it properly. That step was way longer than I thought it would be. You'll find pics of the robot being masked in my previous Instagram posts. As for the spider, that step was easier. We used automotive #paint, again. And the spider is ready to be exported to Los Angeles! Working on the #costume of my #rachneraarachnera #cosplay for @ninjadivision and @sevenseasentertainment. This is the process you should usually go through each time you start a new costume. Step 1 is always to sew a basic #mockup. Notice that this is NOT the pattern of #Rachnera's top. This pattern doesn't exist yet. But I will show you how I will draw and adjust it. Starting with Rachnera's top, I just made a mockup of a basic top with a collar and no sleeve. I used a basic top pattern already adjusted to my measurements, one of my personal patterns that I have developed over the years. On this mockup, I draw the general shapes and stitches of Rachnera's top, I choose the width of the yellow biais, etc. It will become a halter top. Then I take off the mockup and unsew it. I apply to my original basic paper #pattern the adjustments I have made on the mockup. I will obtain a first new pattern that will be closer to Rachnera's top design and guess what? Next step is to make another mockup to test that first attempt of new pattern. This is the normal process that all the clothing companies go through each time they will develope a new style. I will never repeat enough how mockups are an essential, necessary step in sewing projects. #ninjadivision #sodapopminiatures #sevenseasentertainment #rachnera #monstermusume #japaneseanime #manga #cosplayer #cosplayers #costumer #costumers #wip #makingof #AX2016 #sewing #seamstress #costuming #marieclaudebourbonnais #frenchcanadian

Miracles happen. 2 mockups later and after a night spent working on my #Rachneraarachnera #cosplay #costume for @ninjadivision and @sevenseasentertainment, #Rachnera's top is done! Used black velvet, yellow satin and a white fabric that doesn't fray to cut the little triangles garnish. I thought of a fast and clean way to sew the white garnish to the yellow biais. Since I have very little time left to finish the costume (I'm leaving for Los Angeles tomorrow) I decided not to sew a lining, which is exceptional, and to use the white garnish itself as an interfacing inside the garment. Yes, I know. #underboobs ;) #ninjadivision  #sodapopminiatures #sevenseasentertainment #monstermusume #japaneseanime #manga #cosplayer #cosplayers #costumer #costumers #wip #makingof #AX2016 #sewing #seamstress #costuming #marieclaudebourbonnais #frenchcanadian
